It is Monday, and the trip departure is really closing in. I went to Town Paint in Natick to look for gloves, turned the corner, and saw Jon also looking at gloves. I dropped off tools at the Demler's, and Pam was there too. By the way, they have quite the pile in their garage, but Roger is optimistic that it'll all fit in their van. I meant to remind them not to remove seats as we need the seats for local transport, but forgot. Surely they won't forget . . .
This is my first post to a blog EVER, and it seems to be a mighty dangerous thing for a person like me. Your turn!
Tuesday afternoon.
I just finished collecting my tools from the furnace room where we keep them. I went through everything with the bonus outcome that the furnace room is now tidy. We have lost our hammer - good time to get a new one I suppose.
I only had joint compound spreaders (many sizes) and paintbrushes (many sizes) plus a band sander and a few odds and ends, so I'm packing it myself as checked baggage.
My packing list includes Ibuprofen.
:)
Actually I am not the uuac nola rebuilding team, I am Cris (as opposed to Chris).
I hope you have a fun and safe trip. Spread love across the country.
Good luck!
Donna
The seats in the Demler's van fold down into the floor.
The Blog page looks wonderful and cudos to all who have worked so hard to make this trip accessable by the entire congregation. Those of us at home will keep the home fires going and send our love and prayers down with all of you to NOLA!!!! Hope every one has a wonderful trip! You are all in my thoughts!
Some of us are already there, some are leaving today we are leaving for New Orleans tomorrow. From the people from our group who have already arrived (Sally and Roger) the line that gave me the biggest impact is "We’re here. It is overwhelming. No matter what you think you are ready for, you aren’t." We have asked our friends and family for donations. Most will mail them in. I hope besides building a home we will be able to help give hope to all the people FEMA continues to victimize.

Wait 'til you see our living space. The UU version of FEMA trailers - well - row after row of aerobeds!
Many of us (16) are here - have located the showers at the Presbyterian church, had N'awlins dinner at a place not too far away, shopped for breakfast foods, and are raring to go!
We are sleeping in a gymnasium (this church used to have a school too when it was another denomination). It's coed, there are air mattresses everywhere, and construction equipment. It is more than a little dusty. Despite this, team spirit is high as we carve out our small areas and improvise tables, newly strung lights, etc.
After a lovely dinner at Felix's (to die for chili cheddar grits), we went looking to "make groceries." It took four adults to shop for only tomorrow's breakfast. We figure we'll get really good at shopping for large groups . . . by Friday.
Coming in from the west of the city where the airport is, the destruction is lower key. Things look a tired in spots. Apparently things look much worse coming in from the east where the Demler's drove in. We'll see more as we explore the city tomorrow and then Monday as we work on the house in the 7th ward, which is just east of the French Quarter.
I've heard that people like to tell their Katrina stories down here, and we were witness to that at the Hertz checkout counter, where the rental agent spoke angrily of the LA governor and Ray Nagin. She was gone for 7 weeks but is living back in NO now.
Looking forward to venturing out into other parts of the city this week and working on Miss Orean's house on Monday.
6 am, first morning. About to put coffee on. I'm first one up. I slept surprisingly good, once I shut my mind off. We could all have a great round of "Good Night Johnboy" once everyone arrives and it's bedtime. I took photos of the Gymnasium that we are sleeping in. I'm hoping to post them today. More later. Need my coffee.
I'm so excited for all of you! I love reading what you are doing! I am getting ready for Sunday service and will have all of you in my children's message this Sunday. Hugs and love to all of you!!

You guys are fantastic! Wish I was there. In today's service I talked about the Interfaith Hospitality Network, that we hope to get up and running soon at UUAC. After what you folks are doing, just providing food and hospitality to a few homeless families will be a cinch!
Hi Y'all:
Thanks for keeping the folks in Mass up to date. It sounds like a real adventure. Best of luck with the building project, and enjoy the food down there.
Good Morning crew!!! Thanks so much for the wonderful Birthday Salutations on my answering machine. You all are clearly not only gifted in rebuilding but in singing too! You all made my day!!!
Thanks!
Kate
Hi All: Your President here. I wanted to update you on a Congregational vote taken in your absence. As part of the space planning process, and to save money, we voted to have all of you perform any and all renovations on the Church when you return. The wonderful pictures validate the wisdom of our decision! All joking aside, the pictures are great -- you are all doing a truly wonderful thing and representing the UUAC at First Parish extremely well. We are all very proud of you and can’t wait to hear the stories on Sunday. Good luck finishing up and safe travels home. Doug.
